Diplomat Mortgages - are surprsingly more complex and difficult to obtain and the number of mortgages granted to diplomats is relatively small.

Home mortgage UK lenders are concerned that in the event the mortgage payments on the home are not maintianed, they would need to repossess the property. In doing so, a diplomat may invoke their rights to diplomatic immunity.

The view of lenders is in stark contrast to UK landlords who welcome diplomats as tenants given the security of their employment. Diplomats often have the upper hand on reputation. Landlords know they will get their money, know the tenancy is usually a long-term lease, and they’ve been happy with how diplomats take care of homes. Lenders however, fear that the concept of diplomatic immunity can be invoked against them obtaining an order for possession and if an order is made, the taking of possession by court officials.

Diplomat mortgage applications therefore need to be handled sensitively and a range of reassurances can be given to the mortgage lenders to allay their fears.
